JCHS boys track brings home two State Championships
Members of the 2013 Jenkins County High School (JCHS) Boys War Eagle Track and Field team traveled to Jefferson to compete in the XLII Georgia Olympics May 2-4. JCHS came away from the highest level of competition for the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) athletes with two State Championships.
On Friday, May 3, Mark Brannen won the Single-A Public School State Championship in the 3200 meter run (2 miles) with a time of 10:33. On Saturday, May 4, Dezmond Moran won the Single-A Public School State Championship in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of :15.85.
“The JCHS team qualified in six events and had solid finishes in all the events in which they participated. Heavy rains and unseasonably cool temperatures plagued the events at times, totaling over six inches for the three day period. However, the athletes adapted to and overcame miserable weather to turn in some very competitive performances,” said Coach Jimmy Brannen.
On Thursday, May 2, Mark Brannen finished third in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:50.
On Saturday, May 4, JCHS competed in four additional events, including the 110 meter hurdles which Dezmond Moran won. The 4x100 relay team consisting of Zavondric Shingleton, Ricky Dawson, Willie Emory and Jamaine Torrence battled a rain soaked track to finish fourth in the state with a time of :44.97. Marlon Sapp Jr. finished eighth in the 800 meter run (1/2 mile) with a time of 2:22. Dezmond Moran rounded out the competition with a fifth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of :44.86.
